Officers and Key Personnel
Steve joined Insurance Associates in 1987, and is currently the firm’s President. In addition to leading the company, he serves as the Account Manager for several large construction clients. Steve began his career with the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company as a surety underwriter in 1980. He is a Past Director of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers and is a current member of the Surety Information Office Policy Board and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Steve graduated from West Virginia University in 1980 with a B.S. in Finance and is married to his wife Kathy whom he met at WVU. Together they are very proud of their four grown sons. On the recreational side, Steve enjoys golf, spin class, outdoor riding and attending Capitals and Nationals games.
Aldo joined our team in 1994, and is the Manager of our Fairfax office. In addition to his management responsibilities, he is responsible for the production, marketing and servicing of construction accounts. He began his career as a Surety Underwriter with The Aetna, and served as the Bond Manager for a large national broker before joining Insurance Associates. He currently serves on the National Board for the National Association of Surety Bond Producers as the Regional Director for Region 9. Aldo previously served on the Boards of Directors of the American Subcontractors Association of Washington, DC and the Associated Builders and Contractors (Metro Washington Chapter) for many years. He continues to be active in many of the local construction trade organizations. Aldo graduated from the University of Maryland in 1987 with a B.S. in Finance and Management Science. He is married and has two daughters. When he is not focused on work, he enjoys golfing and spending time with his family at the beach.
Paul is Senior Vice President who also handles his own construction accounts specializing in insurance and bonding. He is responsible for many contractors and coordinating risk management, loss control, reviewing contracts, and maintaining relationships with various clients. Paul has served on Agency Advisory Councils with Chesapeake/IWIF and Selective Insurance Companies throughout the years. He is active in various contractor organizations and has served on associate contractor boards with Public Works Contractors Association (PWCA) and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Paul graduated from The University of Maryland, College Park in 1979 with honors in Criminology. He attended various bond and Insurance training schools during his career here at Insurance Associates. In Paul’s free time he enjoys golfing with his clients that he has developed personal relationships with through his years at IA. He also loves spending time with his five grandchildren and wife, Chris.
Ed joined the team at Insurance Associates in 2014. He began his career as an insurance industry specialist at Deloitte. In his twenty one years with an international insurance broker, Ed had several roles in Finance and Operations, the last being CEO of the Baltimore Office. He then joined the leadership team at a regional diversified financial services firm, helping to triple their revenues over his eight year tenure. At Insurance Associates, Ed is leading our strategic growth initiatives, including sales, recruiting, and acquisitions. Ed has earned his Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter designations. Residing in Rockville, Maryland with his wife Marie, they are proud of their three grown children and looking forward to grandchildren. When not working, Ed enjoys golf, tennis and travel.
Art joined Insurance Associates in 2015 as part of a merger with Allegiance Surety Associates, Inc. Art first entered the surety industry in 1995 as an account executive with Maryland Surety Associates where he was responsible for production of new business, managing existing construction and developer accounts, and managing and implementation of IT systems. In 2002 Art along with his wife Cathy purchased from Maryland Surety existing accounts and formed Allegiance Surety Associates. Over the years Art has been active in the Maryland Homebuilders Association, National Association of Surety Bond Producers, and the Washington Metropolitan chapter of ABC. Art has been married to his wife and business partner Cathy since 1993. They have three daughters and two dogs. Art graduated from the University of Maryland in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to work Art enjoys family outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, camping, and playing the guitar.
Mike began his career as a Marketing Representative for The Hartford Insurance Group in 1980. Mike joined Insurance Associates in 1985, and currently serves as an Account Manager with a specialization in handling large construction accounts on loss sensitive programs. From 1991-2006 he handled the Agency’s largest General Contractor, helping them grow from 40mm in annual revenue to over 600mm. He received one of the industries most recognized designations, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, in 1990. Mike graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and was a four year starter on the baseball team were he earned MVP honors in his senior year. He is an avid golfer and enjoys competing in local amateur tournaments.
Mary Ann began her career in insurance with Maryland Casualty Company in 1977. She moved to CNA insurance in 1985 and in 1994 came to Insurance Associates as an Underwriter. Throughout her many years at IA, she has continued to underwrite and became the Agency’s IT Administrator. In 2013, she took on the dual position of Underwriting and Human Resource manager. In her spare time, Mary Ann enjoys reading, spending time at the beach and playing with her two grandchildren.
Karen started in the insurance industry in 1973 and has been with Insurance Associates since 1976. She was proud to become a Vice President for the agency in 1996. Being at IA this long she’s done numerous things for the agency and worked throughout all of the various departments. She is now proud to be the Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager in the Fairfax, VA office. In Karen’s spare time she enjoys long walks with her 2 little doggies (babies) in the park behind her house.
Dan was born and raised in Follansbee WV and moved to the Rockville area in 1992. Dan has been with Insurance Associates since 2001, and prior to this he spent eleven years in the financial services industry as a commercial lender at Sandy Spring Bank and Farmers & Mechanics Bank. Dan has been a top producer at Insurance Associates throughout his carrier, and as a part owner is involved in the management of the organization. Dan is also still responsible for developing new client relationships and servicing his existing clients. Dan has served on the Board of Directors of DCMSA, has been involved on committees at ABC and is a member of various other local organizations. Dan is a graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in Business Administration. Additionally, Dan received his Master’s Degree from Johns Hopkins University with a concentration in Finance in 1999. In Dan’s free time he watches and coaches his children’s athletic teams, plays golf and exercises.
Bill began his career as a bond underwriter for Continental Insurance Company in New York City in 1977. Bill enjoyed a successful twenty seven-year tenure in the surety industry, leaving his most recent position as Senior Vice President for St. Paul Travelers Bond located in Baltimore to join Insurance Associates in 2004. In his position as Vice President of Surety, Bill applies his knowledge and experience in the construction and surety industry to the management of the surety product line. He is currently the Vice President and a Board Member of the Greater Washington Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association, and is an active member in other local trade and industry associations. Bill graduated from New York University School of Business and Public Administration in 1977 with a B.S. degree in Economics and Quantitative Analysis.
Troy is Vice President of Employee Benefits for Insurance Associates, Inc. He has been in the employee benefits industry since 1989 and joined the firm in 2001. Troy relies on his vast knowledge of the health-care insurance industry to help his clients manage their benefits program through sound strategies and innovative, cost effective plan solutions. He specializes in self-funding programs allowing clients to better understand their financial position and make better plan decisions. He works with employer groups and serves as a primary advisor to clients on all group insurance issues. Keeping current with relevant industry changes and legislation allows him to effectively negotiate renewals, oversee marketing and consult with clients to implement the most suitable and cost effective benefit programs. His consulting encompasses all aspects of the employee benefit program – administration, communication, technology, HR support and compliance. Troy heads a team of experienced professionals that have in-depth product knowledge, technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and are dedicated to providing best in class service to customers. He is responsible for maintaining and enhancing key vendor partnerships, developing best practices and strategies, and supporting our clients and team members with the best tools and resources available. Troy attended the University of Maryland and obtained a degree in Business Management. He is a member of the Metro Washington Association of Builders and Contractors and Society of Human Resource Management. He is a past board member of Frederick County Boys & Girls Club and the State of Maryland Association of Health Underwriters. Troy is married with two children and is long time resident of Maryland. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, cycling, and running marathons.
After graduating from James Madison University, Mike has worked in the commercial insurance business since 1976. Prior to coming to Insurance Associates in 2006, Mike produced and managed commercial insurance accounts for eleven years for USI in Falls Church, VA. Mike continues production and account management duties for Insurance Associates, specializing in larger contracting clients. In his spare time, Mike has performed in local musical theater for many years, and was recognized by DCMetro Theater Arts as a Best Supporting Actor in 2014 for his role as Igor in Young Frankenstein.
Hugh is a native of Washington, DC (third generation) and was raised in Silver Spring, MD. He graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and the University of Maryland at College Park. He entered the insurance business in 1977 and began his career as an independent claims adjuster. He went onto adjust claims for a direct writing insurance company and was encouraged to become a commercial insurance salesperson for that company. He eventually entered the brokerage end of the business when he joined one of the largest, international insurance brokers. Hugh has focused on the commercial insurance needs of contractors, technology companies, and non-profits among other industry sectors. He joined Insurance Associates in May of 2009 to focus on new business sales and account management. Hugh currently serves on the board of the Home Builder’s Care Foundation (the non-profit arm of the Maryland Building Industry Association) and served as their President for two consecutive terms. He was the Co-Chair of the Georgetown Preparatory School Parent’s Club and a member of the Father’s Club at the Academy of the Holy Cross. He currently serves on the board of the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County and chairs their Fall Golf Outing. He is a great believer in giving back to the community in which he works. He is married to Cathy McCann Carroll and the proud father of son, Sean and his wife, Holly, and daughter, Maura. Sean and Holly just made him the proud grandfather of Aine Rose.
Carolyn has worked in the health insurance industry since 1987 and holds both Life and Health and Property and Casualty insurance licenses. Carolyn began her career with Prudential Life and Health Insurance Company selling their products to large employers. Carolyn then joined Patterson/Smith Associates which was later purchased by USI. During her fifteen years there, she worked as a consultant before being named a Vice-President. Carolyn came to Insurance Associates in 2004 and is in the Fairfax Office. Carolyn specializes in the design and implementation of both fully insured and partially self-funded benefit programs for mid to large size companies. Carolyn’s strength is in understanding the unique needs of her clients and ensuring that they are able to maintain the highest quality benefits programs at the most affordable price. Carolyn received a B.S. in Business Administration from Bucknell University. She has also earned the designation of Health Insurance Associate from the Health Insurance Association of America. Carolyn enjoys spending time with her two daughters and her two dogs. She also enjoys watching soccer.
Karen joined Insurance Associates in May, 2016. Karen began her career in Property and Casualty insurance during high school in her father’s insurance agency in Maine. She later moved to Florida where she worked for 20 years at independent insurance agency specializing in Construction. Her duties included account management, risk management, client services, marketing, sales, and agency operations. Karen graduated from Florida State College at Jacksonville and also earned her Certified Insurance Counselor Designation in 2003 and Certified Risk Manager Designation in 2009. Karen’s strength is in understanding the unique insurance needs and issues of the construction industry and her ability to problem solve. In her spare time, Karen enjoys spending time with her four children and four grandchildren, camping, hiking, and going to the gym.
Bill graduated from East Carolina with a BS in Political Science before beginning his career with The Hartford as a multi-line claim rep in the Carolinas. Moving to the DC area he spent eighteen years at Travelers in multiple claim roles including Property Supervisor, Litigation Claim Handler, Construction Defect and lastly as Auto/General Liability Unit Manager in their Construction Department. As IA’s Director of Claims, BilI’s primary role is as an advocate for our clients and to manage relationships and rapport with our carriers. He is a technical resource for complex claims and disputes and also uses his experience to assist with loss control and training needs. In his free time, Bill is passionate about rugby and has played since 1996 with his beloved DC based West Potomac RFC, up and down the Mid-Atlantic and in Europe, Canada and Taiwan. He has also been a member of the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department since 2006.
Lexi graduated from Loyola University Maryland with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a concentration in Marketing. She began her career in Baltimore with a uniform company starting in their management development program. After two years she moved up to the position of Catalog Sales Manager where she managed all catalog sales revenue for the organization totaling over 1 million dollars per year. In 2009 she went back to graduate school to earn her MBA at Loyola University Maryland. Upon graduation, Lexi received an offer to work with a national home builder selling new construction homes to buyers in the Howard County Maryland area. She worked in Sales and Marketing with the builder for close to two years when another opportunity came up, this time with Insurance Associates as their Marketing Manager. Lexi has been with IA since 2012 and is proud to have developed their strategic marketing plan from the ground up. She is responsible for all agency branding and has created standardized processes for newsletters, social media usage, eblasts, and has helped develop and update the company website on a consistent basis. In addition to marketing responsibilities she also demonstrates our interactive portal to clients and manages PR activities for the agency. Lexi also acts as the firm’s liaison with all associations to get valuation information out to the right audience. In her spare time she represents IA as Chairman for a local construction nonprofit association: Associated Builders and Contractors of Metro Washington’s Young Professionals Group (ABC.XYZ).
Before coming to Insurance Associates, BJ spent twelve years working for several property and casualty insurance companies with four years in management. He completed his studies through The Institutes and earned the prestigious Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2012. Recently BJ graduated at the gold level from ABC of Metro Washington’s Leadership Development Program. At Insurance Associates, BJ is first and foremost an advocate for our clients. Whether it’s helping a client lower their experience mod or using his expertise to get a claim paid for a client, he is always available to help a client with any of their claims needs. In his free time BJ is most likely to be found on the golf course or spending time with his two cats, Lenny and Mama.
Jon has been helping clients find tailored solutions to their employee benefit needs since 1999. He spent six years at Aetna, Inc. in various capacities, including Account Manager for Key Accounts and Sales Manager for MD/VA/DC. In 2005, Jon transitioned into the world of consulting by joining Kelly Benefit Strategies where he spent nine years managing existing accounts as well as developing new business. Jon joined Insurance Associates in December 2014 and as part of the team he is responsible for new business development and has already been a great contributor to the growth of the organization. Jon studied International Business at the University of Maryland, College Park and lives in Urbana, MD with his wife and three kids where he has an active role in their little league baseball program.
Kristy is the Personal Lines Account Executive at Insurance Associates. In this role she applies a client-centric approach to developing insurance solutions and a long-term commitment to client relationships. She specializes in personal insurance for individuals ranging from homeowners to specialty lines including fine jewelry and art work, to vacation yachts. Kristy is dedicated to providing personalized and knowledgeable service. Kristy began her career in Personal Lines at a small State Farm agency in 1999. In 2001 she joined USAA and served in several positions of increasing responsibility and managing personal lines accounts. When away from the office, Kristy enjoys the outdoor life, cooking and spending time with her family.
Adam joined Insurance Associates in 2015 as part of a merger with Allegiance Surety Associates, Inc. Adam has been in the surety industry since 2008 and has focused on working with developers and contractors throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Adam is responsible for developing new client relationships and servicing his existing clients. Adam is involved in committees for the American Subcontractors Association, Inc., Maryland Building Industry Association, The Cornerstone Group and various other local organizations. He is a graduate of the University of Hartford with a B.S. in Business Administration. In Adam’s free time he enjoys playing golf, basketball and spending time with his family and friends.
Suzy has been in the employee benefits industry since 1985. She brings a wealth of knowledge to Insurance Associates as evidenced by her previous success at the carrier, agency, and national wholesaler level. Her responsibilities have included positions in Customer Service, Sales and Marketing, Training, and Management where she has been highly involved in consulting with employers on group health plans that would meet their company goals. Suzy joined the Insurance Associates benefits team as the in-house Compliance Officer. She will use her knowledge and previous experience she gained throughout her time in the industry to educate and advise groups on the constantly evolving legislative requirements in healthcare reform. Suzy will be responsible for conducting and overseeing research, development of “simple to understand” educational materials for clients, as well as presenting all aspects of health plan compliance to our clients. She will be keeping abreast of all changes in regulatory requirements and interpreting their meaning and effect on our client community. Suzy attended the University of Maryland and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree. In her free time she enjoys skiing, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.
Katie has been in the Employee Benefits industry since 2000. Prior to joining Insurance Associates Katie was with a third party administrator where she served as an Account Manager and Supervisor of the Group Administration Department. At Insurance Associates, Katie works closely with clients, insurance carriers, and vendors to ensure that all employee benefit needs are met and are done so in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. In her spare time, Katie enjoys playing with her two children and watching game shows.
